The American Red Cross is a nationally recognized course.

SHALLOW WATER CERT ONLY.

Must be 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of this course.

2.  Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl (freestyle), breastroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.

3.  Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.

4.  Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:

  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
  • Surface dive, feet first or head first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
  • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so you are able to get a breath. Candidates should not swim the distance under water. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Certification Requirements:

  • Attend and participate in all class sessions.
  • Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities.
  • Demonstrate competency in all required final rescue skill scenarios.
  • Pass both the Section 1-CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid and Section 2-Lifeguarding Skills final written exams with a minimum grade of 80 percent.

Certificate Issued and Validity Period:

Certificates will be emailed within 4 weeks of course completion and will be valid for two years.

YMCA Lifeguard Certification is a nationally recognized course.

This course is designed to provide participants the knowledge and skills necessary to be a lifeguard and professional rescuer. Participants will be certified in American Safety and Health Institute’s (ASHI) courses: CPR Pro (BLS) for the Professional Rescuer, Basic First Aid for the Community, and Emergency Oxygen Administration.

The course presents information on the skills and knowledge lifeguards need in pool, lake, river, surf, and waterpark environments. The comprehensive course offers up-to-date information on how to lifeguard by anticipating and preventing problems before they occur and by taking action to help those in danger when necessary.

The course covers safety skills, accident prevention, scanning, guarding techniques, emergency systems, rescue skills, first aid in aquatic environments, spinal injury management, open water dangers, legal responsibilities, pool maintenance basics, and information on how to get a job as a lifeguard. Students must pass the physical skills test prior to the class and must be 16 years of age by the last day of the scheduled class.

Training Prerequisites:

  • Age 16 and older by the last day of the course
  • Swim 100 meters front crawl
  • Tread water for 2 minutes, and then swim 250 meters with the following strokes: 50 meters front crawl head up; 50 meters breaststroke; 50 meters breaststroke head up; 50 meters sidestroke; 50 meters breaststroke kick on back hands on stomach.
  • Swim 20 meters sprint, dive to bottom pickup ring and tread for 1 minute no hands; replace ring, climb out of pool, listen to the instructors directions and complete requested tasks.
