June’s Focus: Respect Starts Here

Take a look around.

The world could use a little more respect.

Not the kind that’s polite on the surface but harsh underneath. Not the kind that disappears when things get uncomfortable. We’re talking about real respect — the kind that listens, shows up, and stands up for others. That’s what we believe in at the YMCA.

This June, we’re turning our attention to Respect — one of our core Christian principles, and frankly, a value that feels more necessary than ever.

What Respect Looks Like at the Y

You can see it in our swim instructors crouched poolside, encouraging a nervous child.
You can hear it in the conversations between our teen leaders and mentors.
You can feel it when you walk in and someone knows your name.

We don’t always get it perfect. But we strive every day to be a place where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued — no matter who they are or where they come from.

Why It Matters

Respect is the foundation for everything else.
It builds trust between neighbors.
It teaches kids how to work through conflict.
It creates safer spaces for people to grow — physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

When we respect others, we create stronger communities. And when we model it, others follow.

Carrying It Forward

This month, we’re challenging ourselves – and you – to live respect in real, tangible ways.

  • Give someone the benefit of doubt.
  • Pause and really listen before offering your opinion.
  • Look people in the eye. Say their name. Ask how they’re doing … and mean it.

Big changes don’t always come from big moves. Sometimes it comes from small moments done with big respect.

Let’s make this month count. Let’s lead with respect — at the Y and beyond.

May Principle: Gratitude – A Season of Reflection and Giving

As the month of May blooms around us, it’s a natural time to pause, reflect, and recognize the countless blessings that shape our lives. At the YMCA of Coastal Carolina, our Christian principle for May is Gratitude – a value that calls us not only to feel thankful but to live thankful.

May brings with it special opportunities to practice Gratitude:

Mother’s Day reminds us to honor those who nurtured us — mothers, grandmothers, mentors, and caregivers who give so selflessly. At the YMCA, we see their spirit in every child’s laugh at summer camp, in every swim lesson, and in every caring volunteer who shows up to lead and serve. This month, we invite you to show gratitude for the nurturing influences in your life by giving back, whether it’s reading to a child, helping a neighbor, or simply saying “thank you.”

Memorial Day reminds us of the ultimate sacrifice made by the men and women who fought for our freedoms. Their courage and devotion shape the community we enjoy today. As we honor them, the YMCA also renews our commitment to service – offering programs that strengthen youth, support healthy living, and build social responsibility. When we serve others, we honor the sacrifices of those who served us.

Gratitude at the YMCA happens every day:

  • When a swim instructor teaches life-saving skills to a beginner swimmer, gratitude is at work.
  • When a volunteer coach encourages a young athlete, gratitude is lived out.
  • When a member smiles at a stranger in the fitness center, offering connection and kindness, gratitude grows.

At the Y, we believe gratitude isn’t passive – it is an action. It’s how we strengthen each other, our community, and our future.

This May, we invite you to live your gratitude. Volunteer. Lend a helping hand. Sign up for a program that renews your spirit. Or simply pause to thank those around you – and recognize the blessings that fill our lives, even in the smallest moments.

We are grateful for you — our members, our volunteers, our neighbors.

Together, we are building a stronger, more compassionate community. And that is something worth celebrating.

Grace In Action: Extending What We’ve Been Given

Grace is a Gift to ourselves and those around us…

At the YMCA of Coastal Carolina, our mission goes deeper than wellness programs and youth sports. Each month, we reflect on a Christian principle that grounds the work we do and the way we show up for our community. This month, we focus on Grace

What Is Grace?

Grace isn’t about perfection. It’s not earned or deserved—it’s freely given. It shows up when we offer someone a second chance, when we choose kindness over judgment, or when we slow down and extend patience to someone who’s struggling.

Grace is forgiveness in motion. It’s compassion without condition.

Why April Is the Perfect Time for Grace

April brings new life. Spring arrives. Easter reminds many of us of the ultimate example of grace. It’s a season that speaks to fresh starts, second chances, and the power of renewal. That’s what grace is all about—believing that no matter what came before, something good can come next.

How We Practice Grace at the Y

We try to make grace more than an idea—we put it into action:

  • Financial Assistance: We offer support to families who need help accessing programs or membership. No one is turned away due to financial limitations.
  • Welcoming Everyone: We open our doors to people from all backgrounds, stories, and situations.
  • Supporting Youth: We help young people grow through structure, mentorship, and space to make mistakes and learn from them.
  • Meeting People Where They Are: Everyone’s wellness journey looks different. We support all of them with dignity and respect.

Extending Grace—To Others and Yourself

This month, consider how you can live out grace in your own life:

  • With your family.
  • With your coworkers.
  • With strangers.
  • With yourself.

You never know what someone else is carrying. Your patience, your encouragement, or your smile could be the moment of grace they need.

A Final Thought

At the Y, we’re proud to be a community that reflects the power of grace—not just in what we say, but in what we do. Let’s carry that spirit forward together this April.

“Let your conversation be always full of grace…” – Colossians 4:6

Together, we can teach 1,000 kids to swim this summer 🐥

This April, the YMCA of Coastal Carolina is launching the Splash Safe Challenge—an ambitious effort to provide 1,000 free swim programs to children across our community.

We believe that every child deserves to feel safe and confident in the water. Yet, far too many don’t have access to swim lessons, and that puts them at risk.

Why It Matters

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4, and the second leading cause of injury-related deathfor children ages 5 to 14. The statistics are heartbreaking—but preventable.

Many families in our community face barriers to swim lessons due to cost, transportation, or lack of access. According to the American Red Cross, 79% of children in households earning under $50,000 have few-to-no swimming skills.

We’re working to change that—one splash at a time.

How You Can Help

When you give to the Water Safety for All Fund, you’re doing more than just donating. You’re helping:

  • A child learn life-saving swim skills
  • A parent feel more confident at the pool or beach
  • A family access resources that may have felt out of reach
  • A generation grow up with more safety, confidence, and joy around water

Every $50 gift provides a 4-week swim program for one child.

Thanks to our generous donors, Melinda Grafton and Michael Lestingi, all donations will be matched up to $7,500—so your gift goes twice as far.

Make a Splash With Us

This campaign isn’t just about fundraising. It’s about community. Throughout April and May, you’ll see duck-themed decorations at the Y!

We invite you to get involved:

  • Donate: https://givebutter.com/splashsafe
  • Share: Follow us on social media and spread the word using #SplashSafeChallenge
  • Apply: Scholarships are available for families who need help accessing lessons

Together, we can teach 1,000 kids to swim—for free—and make this summer the safest yet.

A New Year of Hope: Building a Brighter Tomorrow Together

Embracing Renewal, Strength, and Community in 2025

As we turn the page on the calendar and welcome a new year, it’s natural to reflect on where we’ve been and look ahead with anticipation. January is a month of beginnings, a time when many of us set goals, make plans, and dream big. It’s also the perfect time to embrace the Christian principle of Hope.

Desmond Tutu once said, “Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all the darkness.” Hope is a powerful force, reminding us that brighter days are ahead and encouraging us to take steps toward a better future. At the YMCA of Coastal Carolinas, we believe that hope is the spark that ignites transformation—in individuals, families, and communities.

As the Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 15:13, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” This verse serves as a reminder that hope is not only a gift but also a reflection of our trust and faith in God’s plan.

Why Hope Matters in January

January is a season of possibilities. After the celebrations of the holidays, we find ourselves standing at the threshold of a new chapter. It’s a time to reflect on past challenges and successes and to set our sights on growth and renewal. Hope is what gives us the courage to face the unknown and the drive to pursue our dreams, no matter how daunting they may seem.

Hope also reminds us that we’re not alone. It connects us to a greater purpose and to one another, fostering a sense of community and shared determination.

What Does Hope Look Like?

Hope is more than wishful thinking; it’s a mindset and a practice. It’s about believing in the possibility of change and taking actionable steps to make it happen. Here are a few examples of how hope can manifest:

– A parent signing up for a fitness program to improve their health and set an example for their children.

– A young person pursuing educational opportunities with the support of mentors and resources.

– A community coming together to support neighbors in need through volunteerism and service.

At the YMCA, we see hope every day in the faces of those who walk through our doors. Whether it’s someone starting their fitness journey, a family finding connection through our programs, or a teen discovering their potential in a leadership initiative, hope is alive and thriving.

Hope in Action at the YMCA

At the YMCA of Coastal Carolina, we are committed to being a beacon of hope in our community. Through our programs and initiatives, we strive to create opportunities for growth, connection, and transformation. Here are a few ways we’re bringing hope to life:

  • Youth Development Programs: Empowering young people to achieve their full potential through mentorship, leadership training, and educational support.
  • Wellness Initiatives: Helping individuals and families take control of their health and well-being through fitness classes, nutritional guidance, and mental health resources.
  • Community Outreach: Providing resources, services, and support to underserved populations, ensuring that everyone has a chance to thrive.

How You Can Cultivate Hope

As we embrace hope this January, here are some practical ways you can nurture this principle in your own life:

1. Set Realistic Goals: Start small and build momentum by setting achievable goals that align with your values and aspirations.

2. Get Involved: Join a YMCA program, volunteer in your community, or find other ways to connect with others who share your vision for a better future.

3. Practice Gratitude: Take time each day to reflect on what you’re thankful for. Gratitude can strengthen your sense of hope and optimism.

4. Encourage Others: Share words of encouragement and support with friends, family, and colleagues. Sometimes, a kind word is all it takes to inspire hope in someone else.

A Call to Action

As we journey through this new year, let’s make a commitment to carry hope with us—not just for ourselves, but for our community. At the YMCA of Coastal Carolinas, we’re here to support you every step of the way. Together, we can build a brighter tomorrow.

What are you hopeful for this year? We’d love to hear your thoughts. Share your hopes with us on social media or in person at your local YMCA. Let’s inspire one another to keep striving for a better future.

This is the first installment in our monthly series, driven by our dedicated staff, highlighting a Christian principle each month. These values are chosen to inspire personal growth, guide our service, and deepen our commitment to making a positive impact in our community.
